Tsukiji - Vertical Fish Market
Problem: Redesign the Tsukiji Fish Market to either on existing site (with justification) or on new proposed site to open up the current site for new development.
Solution: The Design is situated on the existing site to maintain the deeply established connections to the community that are already in place and would be severed by a move. Densification of the Market functions allowed the addition of new program such as residential and commercial spaces and better utilizes the prime realestate. In order to densify the linear market program we designed a vertical market that utilizes the concept of a screw to spiral a continuous path vertically. The Vertical program is split into four interconnected towers-- three for fish, one for produce-- topped with farm production and Employee housing. The existing historic market building will be maintained and renovated to reflect Tsukiji's history. Delivery traffic is pushed underground to further open up the site. The towers' facades are designed as a living, breathing wall to allow a disipation of the odors of a fish market. each tower is also wrapped in a ramp that acts as circulation for the market and park for the housing.
